　「ビルゲイツのいやがっているあだ名」という話がネットに出回っているようだ。そのあだ名とは「prn」だ。どうしてこんなあだ名が付いたのか、解説もされている。学生時代に年間300冊以上を読破するビルゲイツ氏、いつも書籍を数冊持ち歩いていた。そこでついたあだ名が、「print」を省略した「prn」だった。あだ名をいやがるあまり、Windowsでは「prn」という名前のファイルやフォルダーは作れないことになっている、という内容だ。実際にフォルダーを作って試してみれば、名前には確かに「prn」は使えない。MS-DOSからPCを使っているベテランユーザーの皆さんならば、ここでニヤニヤするところだろう。「予約デバイス名」という、使えない名前がいくつかMS-DOSにはあって、その頃のユーザーには基礎知識のひとつだった。流れを汲むWindowsでも、ほとんどのユーザーがそれを意識しなくなっても、いまだに互換性を保つために継承されていて、それがこの冗談のネタになったというわけだ。
